Hillary smiled. “It doesn’t really matter to me one way or the other.” She glanced at the couple and shrugged. “They don’t have money.”
The couple left a few minutes later without buying anything.
Hillary returned to her plans for the next black-tie event and Luis sat there nodding. When she was finished, he brought up the topic of a silent auction again, and this time he wouldn’t let her speak until he was finished. He even talked over her a few times to make his point. But she sat there with her arms folded across her chest, the corners of her lips turned down, and a dead blank stare.
When he finished she said, “I just don’t think it’s going to make any money. I think the black-tie formal dinner, with the highest ticket selling for five thousand dollars a person, is a much smarter way to go.”
Luis didn’t argue with her. He knew arguing with Hillary about anything was pointless. “I’m not disagreeing with you,” he said.
“But why can’t we just do both events? We’ll do the black-tie dinner first, as we’ve been planning all along. And we’ll do the silent auction a month or so later.”
Hillary sighed. “Because it’s going to take up so much time.” Luis had been prepared. He knew she’d say something like this. “Okay, then I’ll handle the silent auction all by myself.” He knew she’d never let him handle anything by himself. She would wind up taking control simply because it was in her nature. It was a sneaky thing to suggest, knowing how she would respond, but Luis’s goal was to raise money for the association, not worry about Hillary’s control issues. And if she didn’t take control, he would take charge of the event himself.
She finally agreed to bring up the subject of doing both events at the next board meeting. She even promised Luis she’d support him. Then the subject changed to Hillary being a surrogate.
She spoke with a lighter tone, as if she couldn’t wait to carry their child. She even said, “I’ve been going over a few names. And I’ve decided that if it’s a girl, Ina would be the perfect name. If it’s a boy, Illian.”
“Illian and Ina?” It twisted his tongue. Illian sounded as if she’d left the L off the beginning. Ina reminded him of an old woman in granny panties drinking beer straight from the can.
Hillary hugged him. “Aren’t they wonderful names? You know, I never say this often, but I’ve always been a little disappointed that Josh and I named our son Justin. I would have liked a more creative name like Illian or Lorian for him. And I’ve always been fond of Vivian for a boy. But Josh wouldn’t agree.” Luis nodded and said, “Ah well, I think Justin is a nice name.” What he really thought was, thank God Josh decided to fight her on this one. As it was, Justin was an odd, quirky kid, who liked to pull the wings off flies when no one was watching.
